How it works
Words are runs of non-space characters, so punctuation attached to a word doesn’t create extra counts. Characters counts the full text; “no spaces” ignores spaces and line breaks. A paragraph is a block separated by a blank line.
Reading time assumes an average adult reading speed of about 225 words per minute.
Frequently asked questions
How is reading time estimated?
It divides your word count by 225 words per minute — a common benchmark for average adult reading speed — and rounds to the nearest second or minute.
Do you count hyphenated words as one or two?
As one. A hyphen isn’t a space, so “well-known” counts as a single word, matching most word processors.
